Create a target list of companies using independent rankings

 

Inc. Magazine – 5000 Fastest Growing Private Companies in America

The Inc. 5,000 is an expansion of the Inc. 500, which Inc. introduced in 1982. The Inc. 5,000 includes the Inc. 500 but digs deeper to offer a more comprehensive look at the U.S. economy.  Includes a Browse section on front page to sort companies by industry.

 

List of Lists

Includes many different rankings of companies, from the Top Automotive Retailers to the Top 50 Electronics distributors.

 

Boston Business Journal Book of Lists

(Online journal available - Book of Lists is available in print editions on campus)

Available at Horn Library and the MBA Center for Career Development, this print publication lists the top firms in the Boston business market in a variety of categories.  This publication is also available for other top cities is the US.  Visit www.bizjournals.com and select Marketplace to access information for 65 markets in the US.

 

Globe 100 annual

The Boston Globe produces a list of the top 100 Massachusetts companies based on revenue and return on equity.  Includes profiles of the top 10 overall performers.

 

Forbes Global 2000 (World’s 2000 Biggest Companies)

Comprehensive 2008 ranking of the world's biggest companies, measured by a composite of sales, profits, assets and

market value.

 

 

Generate a list of companies by industry

 

Dun's Million Dollar Database
Access Dun’s through Horn library and enter the appropriate SIC Code to search firms by industry.  This information can also be sorted several ways including by location.  

LexisNexis Academic
On the opening screen, select Business tab, then Dossier Create a Company list using either SIC or NAICS codes.

Expand your search by identifying the competition

Horn Library has compiled excellent resources to help you identify your target company’s competition.

InfoTrac Web
Click on the Business & Company Resource Center in the database list and search for company profiles, brand information, rankings, investment reports, company histories, chronologies and periodicals. The Investext Plus database is fully integrated in this database.

Factiva
Search the database using terms such as top 100 or largest or competit* to locate articles on your company.
