Message from the Director
This is an exciting time for the Cutler Center with many new initiatives in the works. We are pleased to announce a gift to the Cutler Center from Carleton (Carl) F. Kilmer M'69, P'09. See below for more details on this generous gift.
These initiatives include a graduate finance curriculum review and new or expanded roles for members of the Cutler Center team. Michael Goldstein, professor of finance, has formally joined the Cutler Center as faculty director. Rick Spillane, Cutler Center Board chair, has expanded his responsibilities with us. Jack Cahill has been promoted to manager, Cutler Center Research and Instruction. With my role of faculty adviser to the finance portion of the Managing Consulting Field Experience course and through additional hours as Cutler Center director, I have transitioned to full time. The finance faculty and Cutler Center Board members continue to play an important role in these and other initiatives.
Thought leadership plays an integral part in the Cutler Center mission. As such, we would like to thank Peter Brooke (chairman, Advent International), Harry Markopolos (exposed Madoff scandal), Jurrien Timmer (director of Investments Research, Fidelity Investments), and Thomas Faust (CEO, Eaton Vance), for presenting at Cutler Center events this fall. Cutler Center News
Carl Kilmer Gift
We are pleased to announce a gift to the Stephen D. Cutler Center for Investments and Finance. The donor, Carleton (Carl) F. Kilmer, received his MBA from Babson College in 1969 and is currently a member of the College's Board of Trustees. His son, Eric S. Crawley M'09, is also an MBA grad, and was a member of the Babson College Fund.
In the course of numerous meetings last summer, it became clear that Kilmer and Stephen Cutler share a common view of the Cutler Center and its potential. Their generosity and commitment to the College and the Finance Division will help fulfill the core mission of the Cutler Center: to get our students better jobs in the fields of investments and finance and to raise the profile of the Finance Division both inside the College and in the community at large.
Kilmer is a 1964 graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he later joined the Board of Trustees and chaired numerous committees. He served in the United States Army, including a tour of duty in Vietnam.
Kilmer had a long and successful career at Accenture, where he became a partner in 1979. He held numerous leadership roles at the firm, and most recently served as the managing partner for the firm's electronics and high technology practice. He retired from Accenture in 2001 after a distinguished 32-year career. Kilmer is active with numerous organizations and charities and has joined the Cutler Center Advisory Board.
IIBD Case Competition
A team of Babson undergraduate students won the bronze prize and HK$5,000 at the IIBD Case Competition on November 13, 2009, at Hong Kong Baptist University. See this Babson press release for additional details. |

Faculty News and Research
Michael Goldstein, professor of finance, was appointed an honorary professor at Queen's University, Belfast (UK, Northern Ireland), last spring. He also was a visiting professor at Trinity College (Dublin, Ireland) from January to July 2009. This past summer, he became an associate editor of The Financial Review, a peer-reviewed finance journal, and was awarded a two-year National Science Foundation grant to investigate the effects of seasonality on the Arctic economy. Jim Parrino, lecturer in finance, presented to a group of senior officers at Morgan Stanley/Smith Barney in October on the state of the market and the impacts on corporations and bank holding companies. The group consisted of senior investment managers from the merger of Morgan Stanley and Smith Barney. Parrino also was a featured speaker at the Business-Government Relations Council retreat in October on the impact of public policy on Wall Street corporate valuations. The Business-Government Relations Council is an association of lobbyists from the Fortune 200. |

Babson College Fund News
The BCF continues to review potential investments and has performed well versus the S&P 500 since the beginning of the academic year. Thus far, more than 40 stocks have been reviewed as potential investments for the fund. The students' semester-end presentations were forwarded to the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees.
Guest speakers this semester have included: Judi Reed and Ralph Constantino on how to network for a job; Chris Bartel, director of Research from Fidelity, discussing how to conduct an industry review; and Steve Gaudette, president of Northfield, who explained how factor models work for portfolio analysis. In addition, the Executives in Residence have made regular presentations.
A very successful field trip to BNY Mellon in Boston occurred on November 20. Jim Palermo M'83, a senior manager at BNY Mellon, led the four-hour presentation on BNY's custody and asset management operations. Finally, a subset of the students is preparing a research report on Staples for the research competition sponsored by the Boston Society of Security Analysts. |

Library Resources News
Bloomberg for Curriculum Development
Beginning in January, Assistant Professor Ryan Davies will be teaching a new class, Fixed Income and Structured Products, and using the Cutler Center's extensive Bloomberg capabilities for a large part of the curriculum. The class will meet in the Cutler Center for one session per week, and each student will take the Bloomberg Essentials certification modules. Unlike other academic investment centers, the Cutler Center is not designed as a classroom, but the availability of 11 Bloomberg terminals with dual screens makes it an ideal location for taking fixed income valuation out of the textbook and into the real world.
FactSet Upgrade
During the holiday break, we upgraded all of our FactSet Directions terminals to the new version of FactSet, which combines a powerful, live market monitor interface with all of the screening and portfolio analytical power of the FactSet workstation. FactSet has become a standard tool for money managers around the world. With this new upgrade, Babson students will have the opportunity to screen, optimize trade, and monitor global equity portfolios while watching their performance versus benchmark in real time. First BIBA Trading Competition Winners
Congratulations to the winners of the first BIBA trading competition! This fall, the Babson Investment Banking Association (BIBA) held its first trading competition. The competition was based on the price discovery case of the Rotman Interactive Trader (RIT) software. The event was a tremendous success with 15 undergraduate and graduate teams participating. Special thanks to Tom Klein who worked for several weeks to get the event organized. Funding support was provided by the Babson SGA. The top three teams were: first place, Khanh Ngo '12 and Ryan McNamara '12; second place, Evan Gilbert, MBA candidate, and Garrett Goggin '92, M'10; third place, Mason Wartman '10 and Ross Klein '10.
Save the Date for the Third Annual BIMA Conference
The Cutler Center Babson Investment Management Association (BIMA) conference is scheduled for Friday, March 26, 2010. The focus of the conference will be: "What's Next in a World of Unprecedented Global Stimulus." The format will include two keynote speakers, two panels, breakfast, a networking lunch, and alumni reception at the end of the conference. Babson College President Leonard A. Schlesinger will be the opening speaker. Seth Klarman, noted hedge fund manager and author, is one of the keynote speakers. The second keynote speaker is Deborah Kuenstner, chief investment officer for the Wellesley College endowment. We hope you will be able to join us! | |
