Principal Topics
The study explores motivational mechanisms, that allow similar set of understandings and actions to develop in a group of individuals, especially in the highly ambiguous conditions of a business venture.
Method
Drawing on the literature involving the process of venture creation and growth, integrated with the theories of small groups, social cognition and motivation, the mechanisms that create and sustain motivation in a group are proposed. An exploratory case study is then carried out in four team based businesses to explore the propositions derived from the literature. The cases represent conceptually and practically interesting types of differences in teams and their developmental trajectories. Single interviews and group discussions with the members of the top teams of the companies are used to prepare the cases.
Findings
Collection and analysis of data is ongoing and a full report of the results will be presented at the conference.
Implications
This study is the first step to further explore the motivational issues embedded in the link between a team and venture success. The identification of the motivational mechanisms will provide us a way to understand the motivational aspects in the activities of the team. The findings also help us to further hypothesize how various factors shape the entrepreneurship process through these mechanisms. In terms of practical implications of the findings, the study provides valuable knowledge for the team building and maintaining in the business ventures.
